Amperes are the unit of measurement for electric current. Amperage is a measure of the amount of electric current in an electric circuit. A milliampere is 1/1000th (0.001) of an ampere, or one thousandth (0.0001) of a kiloampere. A kiloampere is 1000 amperes, or one million milliamperes .The ampere is derived from the French word for "current", and was originally a measure of the force required to move one coulomb of water through a height of one meter in one second. The current continued to be used as a metric unit when James Watt developed his steam engine, with many countries adopting this definition for electrical units.
